Marta and her mother

Marta

Marta has lived with her four brothers, five sisters, a cousin, and her single mom in their one-bedroom house in La Pista since Hurricane Mitch in 1994. Even so, during the informational workshop we held with the applicants and their families, Marta's mom offered to create a small private space where Marta could do her homework and study. Marta's mother is also attending adult education classes provided by the Honduran government- a good demonstration of the value she places on education.

Marta was hesitant to apply for the scholarship, she doesn't have the self-confidence that some of the other girls have and she almost didn’t believe it could be true that she might be given such an opportunity. While Marta enjoys playing soccer and watching television, she told us in her interview that she dreams of becoming a teacher and helping poor people. Marta comes from a hard working family, but she also is very good at making friends. We believe she will use her work ethic and social skills to excel this school year.
