Dilcia and her sister-in-law

Dilcia

One of 12 children dependent on her single mother, Dilcia left home after graduating from 6th grade in 2004 to live with her sister-in-law, cleaning, babysitting, and helping around the house for room and board. Her mother washes clothes in the river that runs past La Pista, and is barely able to make enough money to feed her children. Dilcia doesn't have much support from her immediate family for school, but her sister-in-law asked us to give her a chance to apply given her history of academic excellence and desire to continue her education. We worked with her to identify alternative sources of support; when asked during her final interview who she'd go to for help if she doesn't understand her homework, she added Claudia (our local staff person) to her list of friends, old teachers, and neighbors. We think she'll do just fine!
